APRIL 28, 2008 | Loaded

Loaded is a pretty interesting adjective. In it's non-colloquial form it means "full" - like "The bag was loaded with presents". A "loaded gun" is a gun that has bullets in it.

Apart from the usage above, "loaded" has several colloquial meanings. In terms of slang, "He's loaded" can actually mean two things - 1) He's very rich or 2) He's intoxicated/high (on drugs - Quite a difference huh ? :)

Another interesting use of the word is in the term "loaded question". A "loaded question" is a question that presupposes, implies, or assumes something that's not true - For example, the question "Why do you hate me so much?" presupposes/assumes that you hate me, although I might not hate you - therefore, it's a "loaded question". Another example of a "loaded question" is "Have you stopped stealing?" - this implies that the person was a thief. HOWEVER: If you're talking to a thief, and it's a known fact that he/she used to steal, THEN the question would not be considered "loaded" :)
