APRIL 14, 2008 | I decided against going/I decided to go

To decide against doing something is an English phrasal verb which means to decide not to do something.

Some people make the mistake of thinking that since they can "decide against" doing something, they can also "decide for" doing something. Well, gramatically speaking, "to decide for doing something" is incorrect. The opposite of I decided against doing something is I decided to do something.

Also, remember that whenever you say "I decided against ( + gerund)" you can also say "I decided not ( + infinitive)". The meaning of the two phrases would be the same.
