MARCH 10, 2008 | Stove, oven, range... what's the difference?

We've included a photo to illustrate the difference between the words "stove", "oven", and "range". The appliance you see to the right - the WHOLE appliance - is called a stove. The part that is inside is the oven, which is often used for baking. The part that is on top, is the stove top, or range. This range usually has four burners.

This is what's known as the modern kitchen stove. Throughout history, the word "stove" has also been used to refer to appliances used for heating (heaters). An oven can exist on it's own - it doesn't have to be part of a stove. Wood-fired ovens, for example, are often used to make pizza :)
