MARCH 7, 2008 | What does "tacked on" mean?

If something is tacked on, it is added to something even though it is unnecessary. For example, if you're watching a movie, and you see something that in your opinion is completely unnecessary, something that has nothing to with the plot, you can say that it seems tacked-on.

Tacked-on stems from the English word tack (photo on the left). It probably comes from the idea that something attached with a tack would seem "extra" and unnatural :)
