FEBRUARY 9, 2009 | Thank you very/so much

Q: Is there a difference between "Thanks you very much" and "Thanks you so much"?

A: First, if it's you that is thanking someone, you would say "Thank you very much" and not "Thanks you very much". You can, however, use the more informal "Thanks" (without the words "you very much"). That would be correct as well.

As for the two ways of thanking someone... There isn't that much of a difference between them. To our ears, "Thank you so much" seems to express a little more gratitude, to go slightly beyond the more neutral "Thank you very much".
